The Seattle Seahawks beat the Kansas City Chiefs 20-3 on Sunday night in Kenneth Walker III’s first start back in Seattle. Match figures credited Walker with 36 rushing yards on 14 carries and four catches for 21 yards. He entered the game with an NFL-leading 665 rushing yards this season. Kansas City arrived with a 5-0 record. Walker gained eight rushing yards in the second half, and his longest run covered seven yards.

Walker played his first four seasons for Seattle before signing a four-year, $43 million contract with Kansas City in the offseason. He won the Super Bowl MVP award in February after rushing for 135 yards in Seattle’s 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots. Before Sunday’s game, his reported averages for the Chiefs stood at a league-leading 133 rushing yards per game and 6.3 yards per attempt. Seattle’s defence entered the match having allowed a reported 237.3 yards per game, the lowest figure in the NFL. “We know what type of running back was coming in here, but we don’t allow people to run through our defence,” Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV said.

Seattle held Kansas City to 213 total yards, after the Chiefs entered the game averaging a reported league-high 414 yards. Match figures credited Patrick Mahomes with 165 passing yards, his lowest total this season, and one interception from 33 attempts. Mahomes completed 19 passes. He said Kansas City needed to use play-action and movement plays to counter Seattle’s focus on stopping the run. “All three phases struggled,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said.
