BLUE ORIGIN PLEDGES RETURN TO FLIGHT THIS YEAR AFTER ROCKET EXPLOSION

SAT 13 JUN 2026 SPACE

Blue Origin stated it will resume launches before the end of 2024 following a significant launchpad explosion that destroyed its New Glenn rocket at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station's launch complex 36A last month. Dave Limp, the company's chief executive, announced the timeline on 1 June via social media, using the company's Latin motto "Gradatim Ferociter" (Step by step, ferociously). John Couluris, Blue Origin's senior vice-president of lunar permanence, reaffirmed the commitment at a Nasa event in Houston this week. The explosion was visible more than 100 miles away and caused severe damage to facilities surrounding the launchpad.

The blast occurred just two days after Jared Isaacman, Nasa's administrator, announced Blue Origin had secured a contract to conduct three construction missions for Nasa's $20 billion moon base project this year. The destruction of the New Glenn rocket raised immediate questions about whether the first planned mission could proceed. Blue Origin and Nasa have since launched an intensive investigation into the cause of the explosion, with the agency committing a "whole government response" to support the company's recovery effort. The speed and scale of the response mirrors the coordination that followed the Columbia space shuttle tragedy in 2003.

Blue Origin's recovery timeline and ability to return to flight this year remains critical to Nasa's Artemis III mission schedule and broader lunar ambitions. The company has begun cleaning and rebuilding launch complex 36A. Nasa's substantial investment in Blue Origin's participation in its moon programme reflects the company's importance to the agency's future operations.
