UCF BEATS BYU 39-31 IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
UCF beat No. 2 BYU 39-31 in double overtime in Orlando on Saturday, 24 October. Keyone Jenkins threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Grayson Brousseau in the second overtime. BYU needed a touchdown and a two-point conversion to extend the game, but Bear Bachmeier’s fourth-down pass to Walker Lyons fell incomplete at the UCF four-yard line. The win gave UCF its first victory over a top-five team, according to the account of the game. Jenkins finished with 293 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown.
UCF had a chance to win in regulation after a replay review changed a ruling that Jenkins had lost the ball to an incomplete pass. Officials then gave UCF 15 yards following a penalty against Keanu Tanuvasa, who shoved a Knights player while he was on the ground. BYU blocked Will Stone’s field-goal attempt, which accounts put at 46 or 47 yards. Stone recovered the ball, but a 10-second runoff after his helmet came off sent the game to overtime. Bachmeier passed to Legend Glakser for a touchdown in the first overtime before Jenkins found Josh Derry in the end zone to level the score.
The result left UCF with a 4-3 record and BYU at 6-1, with conference records of 2-2 and 3-1 respectively. BYU had beaten Notre Dame the previous week and entered the game at its highest AP Top 25 ranking since 1984. Kalani Sitake said missed tackles caused problems for BYU, citing “lack of technique but also great skill in space” from UCF. Jenkins said: “We just beat the No. 2 team in the country.”
