NC STATE FIRES DAVE DOEREN AFTER STANFORD LOSS

SUN 25 OCT 2026 FOOTBALL

NC State fired head football coach Dave Doeren on Saturday after the Wolfpack lost 31-28 at Stanford, the university announced. The dismissal came midway through his 14th season, with NC State at 3-4 overall and 1-3 in ACC play. Athletic director Boo Corrigan thanked Doeren for his service and contributions to the university. “We wish Dave, Sara and his family the best in the future,” Corrigan said.

Doeren took charge in 2013 and recorded 98 wins and 74 defeats, the most coaching wins in NC State’s history. The Wolfpack reached 10 bowl games during his tenure but won no ACC title. NC State also finished no season under Doeren with at least 10 victories. This season, the team opened with a 34-8 loss to Virginia, later beat Appalachian State and Louisville, then lost to Wake Forest and Stanford.

NC State named Todd Goebbel, its special teams coordinator and running backs coach, interim head coach. Doeren’s contract calls for a $9.75 million buyout, with three years remaining on the agreement. The university’s remaining payment obligations cover his annual salary and applicable bonuses, but exclude his supplemental income. Noah Fleischman reported that NC State also fired general manager Andy Vaughn after the Stanford defeat.
