WALES INTERNATIONALS SHOWCASE QUALITIES WHILST SEEKING NEW CLUBS

SAT 13 JUN 2026 RUGBY

Wales head coach Rhian Wilkinson stated that free-agent internationals Gemma Evans, Hannah Cain and Elise Hughes demonstrated their abilities during recent World Cup qualifying matches against Montenegro and the Czech Republic. Evans, a defender, is expected to join Newcastle United following her departure from Liverpool. Cain and Hughes remain without confirmed club futures after announcing their departures from Leicester City and Crystal Palace respectively. Wilkinson said the players had "done everything they can to put themselves in the shop window" during the qualifying matches.

Cain scored her sixth goal in six World Cup qualifying games in Montenegro just three days after announcing she would leave Leicester City following their relegation from the Women's Super League. Hughes revealed prior to Wales' victory over the Czech Republic that she is departing Crystal Palace after helping the club secure promotion to the Women's Super League. Forward Tianna Teisar also remains without a club after Bristol City Women announced in May that the academy product would depart this summer. Wilkinson acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, stating she hopes to support her players in securing suitable club positions.

Wales will compete in a two-legged play-off semi-final in October as they attempt to reach a first Women's World Cup. The draw to determine Wales' opponents will take place on 18 June. Wilkinson confirmed that securing club football for squad members remains a priority as the team prepares for the crucial qualifying tie.
