EMILIJA TVERIJONAITE ENTERS VOLUNTARY SUSPENSION AFTER POSITIVE TEST
Lithuanian tennis player Emilija Tverijonaite entered a voluntary provisional suspension on 19 October 2026 after a sample tested positive for canrenone, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said. She provided the sample during competition in Mogyorod, Hungary, on 2 July, according to the agency. A laboratory accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed the substance’s presence on 29 July, the ITIA said. The agency said its rules did not require a provisional suspension in this case because of the substance involved.
The ITIA identifies canrenone as a diuretic and masking agent on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list. The Tennis Anti-Doping Programme bans it at all times, according to the agency. Canrenone belongs to the list’s S5 category of specified substances, for which a provisional suspension is not mandatory. Tverijonaite reached a career-high world singles ranking of 1067 in March 2023, the ITIA said.
“Voluntary provisional suspensions are open to any player under investigation by the ITIA in anti-doping cases,” the agency said. The ITIA’s support programme offers lower-ranked players legal and financial resources for anti-doping cases. The programme also provides emotional support. In a separate case in 2024, Max Purcell chose a provisional suspension after breaching rules on a prohibited intravenous transfusion.
