BRITISH WOMAN DIES AFTER TRYING TO RESCUE SONS IN BAHAMAS
A British woman died in the Bahamas on Tuesday after trying to rescue her two sons during a snorkelling trip, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said. She was snorkelling with her husband and children near the southern point of North Bimini, according to the force. Police said a strong current reportedly swept both boys away. “In an attempt to rescue her sons, the woman was also swept away,” the force said. Both children were later rescued from the water.
Police said officers in Alice Town received a report shortly after 10am that the woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. Rescuers brought her to the dock, where she reportedly received CPR, according to the force. Officers learned that she had then gone to a local clinic for medical attention. A doctor pronounced her dead at the clinic after efforts to save her life, police said. The woman was believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force has opened an investigation into her death. It said it did not suspect foul play at this stage and would conduct an autopsy to establish the exact cause of death. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it was in contact with local authorities and supporting her family. North Bimini forms part of the Bimini island group, which lies between Andros and Miami.
