LISBON WINS EUROPEAN CITY DESTINATION AWARD
The World Travel Awards named Lisbon “Europe’s Leading City Destination 2026”. The Portuguese capital won the title from a shortlist that included Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Dubrovnik and Geneva. London, Lyon, Porto, Rome, Venice and Vienna also appeared on the shortlist. Lisbon sits on the northern bank of the River Tagus, and Porto was the only other Portuguese city shortlisted for the award.
Flights from Birmingham Airport to Lisbon take just under three hours. Quoted November fares from Birmingham started at £16. A separate quoted UK starting fare was £13, with no departure airport or travel month specified. The two prices therefore refer to different advertised offers, and the available details do not establish whether they covered the same route or dates.
The World Travel Awards named Lisbon Europe’s Leading City Break Destination in 2025. It gave Lisbon the World’s Leading City Break Destination title in 2024, ahead of candidates including New York, Sydney and Tokyo. The organisation has nominated Lisbon for the 2026 worldwide city break title. Voting for that award remains open, and the organisation has yet to announce a winner.
