RYAN GARCIA SAYS HE AGREED TO FIGHT FLOYD MAYWEATHER

Ryan Garcia said on 21 October that he had agreed to fight Floyd Mayweather for the WBC welterweight title at 147lb. “But it’s real Floyd and I agree to a fight 147 for the WBC welterweight championship of the world,” Garcia wrote on social media. Garcia also said on Instagram that he and Mayweather had discussed the proposed fight by telephone. Terence Crawford responded the following day by predicting that Mayweather would win. Crawford asked Garcia: “Shouldn’t you be fighting all these young hungry in prime lions?”

Garcia won the WBC title earlier this year by outpointing Mario Barrios. He stopped Conor Benn in the second round of his first defence. Reports of unification talks with Teofimo Lopez preceded Garcia’s announcement about Mayweather. Mayweather first won the WBC welterweight title by beating Carlos Baldomir in 2006. He regained it by stopping Victor Ortiz in 2011 and held it until 2015.

Mayweather retired after beating Conor McGregor in 2017, with a professional record of 50 wins and no defeats. Legal issues prevented a planned professional rematch with Manny Pacquiao from taking place this year. Plans now target 2027 for that fight. Mayweather did not mention Garcia in his latest interview. Garcia has also publicly urged Crawford, who has retired, to return to boxing and face him.
