ANDY BURNHAM JOINS CELEBRITY GOGGLEBOX AT DOWNING STREET
Andy Burnham is set to become the first prime minister to appear on Channel 4’s Gogglebox. The Makerfield MP filmed a celebrity edition for Stand Up To Cancer with Steve Rotheram, the Mayor of Liverpool. A trailer shows the two friends sitting together at No 10 Downing Street. Channel 4 has scheduled the episode for 9.05pm on Friday 22 October.
The trailer opens with a close-up of the black door at No 10 before Burnham and Rotheram discuss what to eat while watching television. Burnham lists beer, Skips, pork scratchings, bacon fries and Twiglets among the refreshments. “Twiglets are probably the best, aren't they?” he says. Rotheram appears to favour prawn cocktail Skips. A voiceover introduces them as “good friends Andy and Steve”.
Jeremy Corbyn appeared on Gogglebox for Stand Up To Cancer in 2017, when he was Labour leader. Burnham also discussed bar snacks in a social media post in August, ranking them while drawing attention to a business rates cut for hospitality venues. Anna Turley defended the post at the time, saying Burnham’s approach was “reaching people”. The scheduled broadcast will put Burnham and Rotheram’s television conversation before Channel 4 viewers as part of the charity edition.
