FRAUDSTER JAILED FOR £77,000 RENTAL SCAM ON FACEBOOK

FRI 12 JUN 2026 CRIME

Frederic Priestley from Southwark in south-east London has been jailed after defrauding more than 30 people out of more than £77,000 in a rental scam. Priestley falsely advertised a property for rent on Facebook between April and September last year. He obtained payments and deposits from prospective tenants for a property he did not own. Police confirmed the conviction following the case.

The scam operated over a six-month period during which Priestley targeted multiple victims through the social media platform. Each victim believed they were securing a legitimate rental agreement and made financial contributions based on false advertising. The scale of the operation affected renters across London who lost substantial sums to the fraudulent scheme. Priestley's method exploited the common practice of flat-hunting through social media channels.

The case demonstrates the prevalence of rental fraud conducted through widely-used online platforms. Prospective tenants face significant financial risk when engaging with unverified property listings. Authorities have not disclosed details of the sentence length or additional court orders imposed as part of the conviction.
