PANEL SHORTLISTS FOUR PLACES FOR 2029 UK CITY OF CULTURE

THU 22 OCT 2026

Blackpool, Milton Keynes, Sheffield and Wrexham have reached the shortlist for the 2029 UK City of Culture title, according to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). An expert advisory panel chaired by Sir Phil Redmond recommended the four places. DCMS said the government would give each at least £125,000 to develop its bid. The winner will be announced in May and receive £10 million to deliver a year of cultural events and activities. The title is awarded every four years.

The four places were selected from a longlist that also included Inverness, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth and Swindon. Bradford currently holds the title, following Derry-Londonderry, Hull and Coventry. Bidders were asked to explain how cultural projects could create opportunities and strengthen community life in their areas. Blackpool is known for Blackpool Tower, Pleasure Beach and Illuminations, and its Showtown museum covers the town’s entertainment history. Milton Keynes is home to Bletchley Park and the National Bowl, which has hosted concerts by Oasis, Queen and David Bowie.

DCMS said previous winners had attracted millions of pounds in additional investment and supported regeneration. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: “Every place has a story worth telling of its own unique history, identity and contribution.” Lynn Williams, leader of Blackpool Council, said the town had entertained people for generations and now had a chance to show the country what it could offer. Jane Carr, leader of Milton Keynes City Council, said the city was approaching the 60th anniversary of its founding. Sir Phil said the panel would visit the shortlisted places.
