LANCASHIRE DECLINES NEW CONTRACT FOR JAMES ANDERSON
Lancashire will not renew James Anderson’s contract for the 2027 season, leaving his playing career in doubt. Incoming director of cricket Paul Farbrace and new chief executive Richard Kenyon told Anderson of the decision on Monday. Lancashire plans a change in direction after a difficult season on and off the field. Anderson is expected to retire rather than seek a contract with another county. Farbrace is due to begin his role next month.
Anderson has played for Lancashire since making his debut in May 2002. He continued with his home county on season-by-season contracts after retiring from England duty in 2024. He captained Lancashire in 2026 and took 50 County Championship wickets at an average of 17. He was one of seven Division Two bowlers to reach 50 wickets during the campaign. His 704 Test wickets remain England’s highest total.
Lancashire finished second-bottom of Division Two with two wins, their lowest County Championship finish since 1984. The club also failed to progress beyond the group stages in both men’s white-ball competitions. Kenyon joined from Nottinghamshire and Farbrace came from Sussex after chief executive Daniel Gidney and director of cricket Mark Chilton left their posts. Anderson has taken 1,193 first-class wickets and more than 400 wickets in limited-overs matches. He received a knighthood for services to cricket 12 months ago.
