IPSOS POLL PUTS TRUMP APPROVAL AT 31 PER CENT

TUE 20 OCT 2026 NORTH AMERICA

US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 31 per cent, the lowest of his political career, according to an Ipsos poll. The same poll found that Democrats led Republicans by 12 points when respondents chose between unnamed candidates from the two parties. The findings come ahead of US midterm elections scheduled for 3 November. Those elections will determine control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

A separate poll put Trump’s approval rating at 33 per cent, also a record low in that survey. It found that seven in ten respondents considered petrol unaffordable. A poll released on Sunday found that 71 per cent of Americans believed the country was on the “wrong track”. That survey also found that 55 per cent would vote for the Democratic Party if an election took place that day.

The polls follow a rise in disapproval of Trump over recent months, particularly since the US and Israel launched a war on Iran on 28 February. Petrol and diesel prices have risen since the war began, with effects across the wider economy. Republicans face the prospect of losing control of the House of Representatives in November. The size of any Democratic gains will depend on the election results.
