MILLIONAIRE HEIRESS SHOT DEAD AT SAFARI LODGE DAY AFTER FRIEND KILLED
Caroline von Rantzau, a 26-year-old member of a wealthy German shipping family, was found shot dead at the Leeuwfontein hunting reserve in South Africa's Limpopo province on June 1. Her death occurred one day after financial manager Arno Koën was discovered shot on the same private estate. Von Rantzau sustained a fatal gunshot wound from a .357 calibre hunting rifle, whilst Koën had been killed the previous day with a 9mm pistol. South African police have launched an investigation into both deaths and are examining a possible connection between the two killings.
The von Rantzau family initially reported that Caroline had died in a vehicle accident, but authorities later confirmed both deaths resulted from firearms. Initial police investigations involved two days of activity at the sprawling estate, including interviews with those present and forensic evidence gathering. According to reports, a witness suggested the hunting rifle may have originated from a gun cabinet belonging to Caroline's father, Dr Eberhart Rantzau. No arrests have been made, no motive has been established, and officers have not ruled out additional lines of inquiry.
Caroline was regarded as an emerging figure within the family's Hamburg-based shipping business. Her father serves as managing director of Deutsche Afrika-Linien GmbH, which sold its container shipping operations to Hapag-Lloyd in 2022. The family maintains investments in South African container infrastructure and Caroline had recently acquired two additional properties near the Mozambique border. Friends indicated she spent considerable time managing animals on the estate and participated in hunting activities.
