Brentford have referred an incident to police after a rugby ball was kicked from a high-rise flat towards the Gtech Community Stadium during Saturday’s match against Liverpool. A video circulated on social media showing the ball travelling from a nearby building towards the ground. The ball appeared to strike the roof of the East Stand before bouncing towards the pitch. Footage later showed a coach removing it. The incident occurred during Brentford’s 2-1 Premier League defeat.

The Gtech Community Stadium forms part of a wider development surrounded by blocks of flats. Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring for Brentford. Victor Munoz equalised for Liverpool. Alexander Isak then scored a late winner for the visitors. Brentford said the item had been kicked from a height towards the field of play while the match was under way.

“Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful,” Brentford said. The club said it was supporting the relevant authorities as they investigated who was responsible. It said appropriate action could result in criminal prosecution. Brentford added that the matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials was of “utmost importance” and said it would support efforts to take action.
