AMAZON DISCLOSES 2.5BN GALLONS WATER USE AT DATACENTRES IN 2025

FRI 12 JUN 2026

Amazon disclosed that its datacentres consumed approximately 2.5 billion gallons of water globally during 2025. The company stated this figure represents water usage across its entire datacentre footprint worldwide. Amazon claimed its water consumption rate of 0.12 litres per kilowatt-hour is lower than competing technology firms. The company asserted it remains on track to achieve "water positive" status by 2030, meaning its facilities would return more water to the environment than they consume.

Amazon said the 2.5 billion gallon figure represents 75 per cent progress towards its 2030 goal, initially announced in 2022. The company cited rainwater capture and wastewater treatment for reuse as methods to achieve water positivity. Amazon's disclosed consumption rate compares to 0.27 litres per kilowatt-hour at Microsoft, 0.19 litres per kilowatt-hour at Meta in 2024, and 1.15 litres per kilowatt-hour at Google during 2025. Amazon attributed its lower consumption partly to use of air cooling technology and recycled water systems.

Datacenter water consumption has risen significantly in recent years, driven by facility expansion and increased demand from artificial intelligence servers requiring greater cooling capacity. Public opposition to datacentre construction has grown across the United States, with surveys indicating most Americans oppose facilities in their localities. Concerns cited include rising electricity costs, visual impact, and water consumption patterns. Water usage at Microsoft facilities increased 34 per cent to 6.4 million gallons during the same period.
