NFL SUSPENDS C.J. GARDNER-JOHNSON FOR SPITTING
The NFL suspended Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson for one game without pay after it said he spat at an opponent during Sunday’s win over the Raiders. Officials ejected Gardner-Johnson from the game, and the league announced the suspension on Monday. The NFL classified his actions as unsportsmanlike conduct under Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1. The rule covers “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship”, according to the league.
Gardner-Johnson is in his first season with Buffalo. He has recorded 26 tackles, defended two passes and made one interception this season. Bills head coach Joe Brady called his actions “uncalled for” at his post-game press conference. “It can’t happen,” Brady said. “It’s going to be addressed. The team is way more important.”
Buffalo has a bye in Week 7, putting the suspension in line to take effect when the team returns to play. The Bills are due to host Baltimore in Week 8. Gardner-Johnson may appeal the suspension. Under the current decision, he would be eligible to return for Buffalo’s Week 9 road game against the Vikings on Monday Night Football.
