HELEN HAINES SUFFERS INJURIES OUTSIDE WANGARATTA OFFICE
Independent MP Helen Haines was injured in an incident involving a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, regional Victoria, on Monday. Emergency services received calls for assistance on Murphy Street shortly before 4pm. Haines’s family confirmed her injuries in a statement and said she was receiving medical care. The family thanked bystanders, health workers and police for their assistance after the incident.
According to the Victorian Emergency Services website, two vehicles responded and the road closed after the incident. A heavy police presence remained near Haines’s office later on Monday. Wangaratta is in north-eastern Victoria, where Haines has represented the electorate of Indi since 2019. Her family’s statement gave no details about the nature of her injuries or the circumstances involving the vehicle.
Haines’s family said neither relatives nor her staff would make further comment at this time. They asked the public and media to respect their privacy and to keep Haines in their thoughts. Nationals MP Michael McCormack called the news “such awful news” in a social media post. He wrote: “Sending my love and best wishes to Helen Haines for a full and speedy recovery.”
