CHELSEA BEAT TOTTENHAM 6-2 IN WOMEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
Chelsea beat Tottenham 6-2 at Stamford Bridge, with Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter scoring twice each in the Women’s Super League. James opened the scoring after dispossessing Toko Koga and shooting from a tight angle. Matilda Vinberg equalised shortly before half-time, heading in Julie Blakstad’s cross. Carpenter restored Chelsea’s lead before James scored her second. Substitutes Sjoeke Nüsken and Maika Hamano added goals, and Carpenter completed Chelsea’s six.
Tottenham made a strong start and continued to create chances after James’s opening goal. Kadeisha Buchanan steered the ball out for a corner ahead of Cathinka Tandberg as Tottenham pressed Chelsea’s defence. The match marked Sonia Bompastor’s 50th Women’s Super League game as Chelsea manager. Tottenham had lost 6-1 to London City Lionesses earlier this month. Martin Ho said that defeat had left him the “most frustrated” he had been during his time at Tottenham.
Chelsea’s victory was their fifth consecutive league win and kept them in pursuit of Manchester City at the top of the table. Ho said: “The first 60 minutes, I can take a lot from.” He said Tottenham had carried out much of what he asked during that period, but losing possession before Chelsea’s second goal affected the team. Bompastor said Nüsken and Hamano came on with confidence and understood what Chelsea wanted them to do.
