ANDREW MARSHALL ANNOUNCES GEORGINA CATES’S DEATH
Andrew Marshall, creator of the BBC sitcom 2point4 Children, has announced that actress Georgina Cates died in May. Cates played Jenny Porter in the series. Marshall said on X that he had only recently learnt of her death and had no details beyond those listed on IMDb. He described her as “lovely and talented” and offered his sympathies to her family and children.
Born Claire Elaine Woodgate, Cates began her television career in 2point4 Children. After an initial rejection under her birth name, she dyed her hair red and presented herself as a Liverpudlian named Georgina Cates to secure the part. Her 1995 film An Awfully Big Adventure brought her wider attention. She also appeared in Frankie Starlight in 1995 and Illuminata in 1998. In Clay Pigeons, released in 1998, she appeared alongside Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix.
Cates took a seven-year break from films before returning in the 2007 independent production Sinner. That performance won her a Best Actress award at the Brooklyn Arts Council International Film & Video Festival. Marshall identified her in his announcement as the first actress to play Jenny in 2point4 Children. He asked anyone with further details about her death to share them.
