FATHER SHOOTS OREGON SCHOOL GUNMAN AFTER FOUR ARE KILLED
Police said Kaylub Giamanco shot and killed a teenage gunman inside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on 15 October. The gunman killed three pupils and a teacher, according to a police briefing. Another pupil and teacher suffered critical injuries. The injured pupil was shot in the face and uses a wheelchair. Giamanco, a carpenter whose two daughters attend the school, was driving home from lunch when he heard gunshots.
Giamanco saw the gunman enter the school after shooting at locked doors, then ran inside with a long gun. Police arrived within three minutes of the first emergency call, according to the briefing. A law enforcement official said the gunman's mother bought the shotgun, but authorities had not confirmed that account. Oregon law permits a minor to possess a shotgun provided by a parent. Secondary school students who said the injured pupil had “inspired” them rallied around her.
Giamanco's family said in a statement read by his mother, Kenda Freeman, that he did not seek recognition. The family thanked first responders, school staff and the community, and asked for privacy and no interviews. Governor Tina Kotek said Giamanco's actions carried a heavy emotional burden. President Donald Trump said Giamanco “took care of business” and that the death toll could have been higher. People placed flowers, balloons and stuffed animals outside Silver Rail Elementary School.
