EVERTON COLLISION SENDS CHELSEA GOALKEEPER MARTINEZ TO HOSPITAL
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez went to hospital after a head injury during Saturday’s Premier League match against Everton. He collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while challenging for a free-kick in the 67th minute. Medical staff gave Martinez oxygen on the pitch before carrying him off on a stretcher. Boos accompanied the Argentina goalkeeper as he left the field at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Chelsea won the match 2-0.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivered the free-kick into the penalty area before Martinez and Branthwaite came together. Martinez had made four saves and claimed two high balls before the collision. He started the match on Merseyside after joining Chelsea from Aston Villa in the summer. Neither side created many chances in the first half. Jorrel Hato then cut the ball back for Pedro Neto, who scored 45 seconds after the second half began.
Neto scored again in the 90th minute to complete Chelsea’s win. The result moved Chelsea into the Premier League’s top four and ended the club’s nine-month wait for a clean sheet. Martinez’s departure forced Chelsea to change goalkeepers during the second half. Mike Penders took his chance in goal after Martinez left the pitch.
