WOLVES BEAT BURNLEY AT TURF MOOR

SAT 17 OCT 2026 FOOTBALL

Wolves beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor after substitute Tawanda Chirewa scored seconds after coming on in the 72nd minute. Jamie Vardy had given Burnley the lead with a low strike in the 20th minute, his first goal for the club. Fer López equalised before half-time after a mistake by Burnley captain Kyle Walker. Chirewa then replaced Sean Neave and scored with an angled shot after Mateus Mané seized on Igor Julio’s heavy touch. Burnley goalkeeper Grégoire Coudert got his hands to the shot but could not keep it out.

The defeat extended Burnley’s run without a home league win to 21 games. Their previous home league victory came against Leeds in the Premier League on 18 October. Burnley had led for much of the first half, and head coach Nicky Hayen said his side could have scored more before López’s equaliser. “We played with a lot of courage in the first half, scored one good goal, and could have scored more,” Hayen said. Wolves arrived at Turf Moor after two consecutive defeats and without Raúl Jiménez and Adam Armstrong, who had joined their injury list during the week.

Hayen said he did not know what the future held for him following the defeat. “I will not give up,” he said. Burnley next host Portsmouth, with Blackburn scheduled to visit Turf Moor on 22 November. Charlton had denied Burnley a home victory on Tuesday when Ivan Mesik equalised in the sixth minute of added time. Sheffield Wednesday went 23 games without a win at Hillsborough last season, setting an English Football League record.
