CAMPBELL PETRIE RECEIVES 12-YEAR SENTENCE FOR RAPE

FRI 16 OCT 2026 CRIME

Judge Alistair Watson sentenced former Police Scotland sergeant Campbell Petrie to 12 years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday. A jury convicted Petrie of nine charges involving physical and sexual abuse of two women between 2006 and 2022. Watson said the offences included several rapes and sexual assaults over about 15 years. Petrie served as a police officer during the offending.

One woman was Petrie’s colleague when he raped her as she slept. Police arrested and charged him in December 2023, and Police Scotland suspended him from duty. He retired from the force in December 2025. Watson said Petrie maintained his denial of guilt when interviewed for a background report. According to Watson, Petrie claimed he could not recall the conduct set out in the charges and had not known that the women felt he had assaulted them.

Watson said: “These statements are bizarre if they have been accurately reported.” He said both women described psychological harm that still affected them in accounts he read before sentencing. Both women gave evidence during the court proceedings and faced questions about their honesty, Watson said. The judge said Petrie’s sentence had to reflect the seriousness and persistence of his conduct.
