METROPOLITAN POLICE ARREST MAN OVER DATABASE ACCESS ALLEGATION

FRI 16 OCT 2026 UK POLITICS

The Metropolitan Police arrested a man on suspicion of an offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 after receiving a report of alleged unauthorised access to a political party’s database. The force said it received the report in September 2025. Officers released the man pending further enquiries, and he has not been charged. Police previously interviewed a woman under caution in connection with the same investigation; she has not been charged. The force has not identified the party involved.

Three people familiar with the case linked the investigation to a dispute over the founding of Your Party. Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana founded the party in July 2025, and both sit as its MPs in the House of Commons. In September, an email went to around 800,000 people on the party’s mailing list, encouraging them to become paying members. Sultana promoted the membership portal, while Corbyn described its launch as “unauthorised”. Their disagreement over the email became public.

Sultana later said her sole aim had been to “safeguard the grassroots involvement that is essential to building this party.” Neither the arrested man nor the woman interviewed by police is an MP. Neither Corbyn nor Sultana faces an accusation of wrongdoing in the investigation. A Your Party spokesperson said it would not be appropriate to comment further on an ongoing police investigation. The spokesperson said the party’s systems were secure and described the matter as an isolated incident; the Metropolitan Police said its investigation continues.
