SONY CANCELS PROMISED ANDROID 17 UPDATE FOR XPERIA 10 VI

FRI 16 OCT 2026 MOBILE

Sony has cancelled the Android 17 upgrade it promised for the Xperia 10 VI, citing limitations in the mobile phone’s storage configuration. The company announced the decision in a notice on its UK support website. Sony said a “detailed technical assessment” found that the device could not deliver an Android 17 upgrade experience meeting its standards. The decision reduces the Xperia 10 VI’s promised total of major Android version updates from three to two.

The Xperia 10 VI launched more than two years ago with Android 14 and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset. Sony’s original commitment to three major operating system updates would have included Android 17, this year’s release. The company said it had “decided not to make this upgrade available” following its assessment of the storage limitations. Sony apologised, acknowledging that its decision “falls short of our original announcement”.

Sony said it would continue to provide the four years of security updates it originally promised for the Xperia 10 VI. That commitment covers security support into 2028, separately from the major operating system upgrades. Sony said the storage issue relates specifically to the Xperia 10 VI’s technical specifications. The company said the decision does not affect its promised operating system updates for other Xperia models.
