GASLY REINSTATED TO MONACO PODIUM AFTER F1 TIMEKEEPING ERROR
Pierre Gasly was reinstated to third place at the Monaco Grand Prix on Friday after Formula One stewards rescinded two five-second penalties for pitlane speeding. Gasly had finished third on the track but was demoted to seventh following the penalties applied after last Sunday's race. Formula One, which manages timekeeping, admitted making a measurement error after Alpine requested a right of review.
Alpine welcomed the decision and thanked Formula One Management and the FIA for their cooperation. Gasly stated on Sunday that he was heartbroken by the penalties and described losing a Monaco podium "for reasons which I just cannot comprehend". The reinstatement moves Red Bull's Isack Hadjar from third to fourth place, McLaren's Oscar Piastri to fifth, Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson to sixth, and his teammate Arvid Lindblad to seventh.
The stewards acknowledged that other drivers who received similar pitlane speeding penalties but did not request reviews served those penalties, which affected their race strategies and results. FIA officials stated they lack the regulatory power to overturn penalties already served and noted no other party sought a right of review within the allowable timeframe. Mercedes driver George Russell, who received a drive-through penalty that cost him points, expressed frustration on Thursday about the potential overturning of Gasly's penalties.
