HAAS SIGN RAFAEL CAMARA FOR 2027 FORMULA 1 SEASON

THU 15 OCT 2026 F1/MOTORSPORT

Haas has signed Brazilian driver Rafael Camara to make his Formula 1 debut with the team in 2027, the sport's governing bodies confirmed. Camara, 21, currently leads the Formula 2 championship standings. He was selected after a process that assessed four drivers in total, including reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and Haas reserve drivers Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa. Camara, Fornaroli and Hirakawa were tested at Portugal's Portimao circuit in August, while Doohan was assessed separately. Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu said Camara had shown he could handle an F1 car well despite limited time to learn it, describing his performance in the Portugal test as "very impressive".

Camara is a member of the Ferrari driver academy, as is Haas driver Oliver Bearman, though Haas has not yet confirmed who will race its second car next season alongside Camara. Esteban Ocon is set to leave Haas at the end of the current season after two years driving alongside Bearman, the team has confirmed. Camara thanked Haas owner Gene Haas and Komatsu for "the trust they have placed in me" and said he would focus on preparing for the move. He added that there would be "a lot to learn" as he works with the team to understand the car.

Haas is widely expected to confirm Bearman for a third season in the seat not taken by Camara, though no formal announcement has been made. Camara's signing gives Haas a driver line-up built around two Ferrari academy members for the 2027 season. The team has not set out a timetable for confirming its second seat.
