CHARGERS SIGN QUARTERBACK JAKE BROWNING AMID HERBERT STRUGGLES

THU 15 OCT 2026 US SPORTS

The Los Angeles Chargers have signed quarterback Jake Browning, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. The move comes after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Browning in August, ahead of roster cuts, having signed him in March following his departure from the Cincinnati Bengals. It is not yet confirmed whether Browning has joined the Chargers' practice squad or active roster. Browning's wife, Stephanie, referenced the family's frequent relocations in an Instagram story, writing that their life has become "one big plot twist". Browning went undrafted in 2019 before being signed by the Minnesota Vikings, and has since featured on rosters including the Bengals and the Buccaneers.

Browning has appeared in 17 career NFL games, starting 10, with a 4-6 record, completing 68.5% of his passes for 2,707 yards at an average of 7.4 yards per attempt, according to figures cited in reporting on the move. He has thrown 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions over his career. With the Bengals last season, he started games after Joe Burrow suffered a toe injury, winning one of four starts, including a 28-3 loss to the Denver Broncos. His performances in that stretch led the Bengals to turn to Joe Flacco instead, reports state.

The signing comes as the Chargers sit at 0-5 for the 2026 season, with starting quarterback Justin Herbert having thrown for 937 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions so far. Backup DJ Uiagalelei remains on the roster, while Trey Lance has been placed on injured reserve with a groin injury. Browning's arrival gives the Chargers a third available quarterback with NFL experience. Reports note that, based on his history, it remains uncertain whether Browning would be called upon to start should Herbert or Uiagalelei be unavailable.
