GUILFOYLE ASKED TO RESIGN AS US AMBASSADOR TO GREECE

TUE 13 OCT 2026 NORTH AMERICA

The White House has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as US ambassador to Greece, following weeks of reports that she sought payment from a political donor in exchange for access to administration officials. Katie Zacharia, the White House press secretary, confirmed the decision at her first briefing, saying Guilfoyle "has been a wonderful asset to the team and we wish her well." The move follows reports that Donald Trump and secretary of state Marco Rubio were angered by the allegations against her. It was not immediately clear whether Guilfoyle had agreed to step down. Her tenure in the role lasted less than a year.

The most serious allegation, reported by the Wall Street Journal on 8 October, concerns donor Eric Deters. Citing Signal messages, the newspaper reported that in July 2025, days before her Senate confirmation hearing, Guilfoyle pressed Deters to pay off a $100,000 American Express bill, telling him the transfer "would not show up anywhere." Deters has said he paid Guilfoyle around $300,000 over several years without receiving "one favour" in return, and told MS NOW the request "absolutely was a quid pro quo." The Journal also reported that Guilfoyle accepted improper gifts and services, made an alleged threat to a host-country official, and promoted the interests of a Greek company, Aktor, during official engagements. Her lawyer, Jesse Binnall, said she disputes the authenticity of the messages.

Guilfoyle, the former fiancée of Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, was one of Trump's longest-standing political allies. Her departure brings an end to her diplomatic posting in Athens. Further details on the circumstances of her exit were expected to follow.
