NORRIS COLLIDES WITH PIASTRI IN SINGAPORE SPRINT RACE
Lando Norris collided with the rear wheel of his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri on the final lap of the Formula 1 Sprint race in Singapore. Norris attempted to pass Piastri at Turn Five while the pair ran in fifth and fourth place, and both cars spun. Stewards classed the contact as a racing incident and issued no penalty. Accounts of the aftermath differ, with one report saying Piastri finished the race in last place and another saying he hit the barriers and retired. One report said McLaren's Sprint points fell to one, down from a potential nine.
Norris said after the Sprint he had the right to attempt the move given the size of the gap. Speaking after qualifying for the Grand Prix, he said: "Really, it's still my fault, but I deserved to go for the space and I still believe I had the right for it." Norris finished fourth in Sunday's Grand Prix, ahead of Piastri in fifth, and said afterwards he needed to think more about the team rather than just himself. Team principal Andrea Stella was later asked whether the message about team orders was reaching his drivers.
Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle said McLaren's Zak Brown and Stella had reacted angrily, citing cost-cap pressures as the team invests in its 2027 car. Former driver David Coulthard said McLaren insiders told him neither Brown nor Stella had been this angry before. Away from the incident, Red Bull's Max Verstappen won both the Sprint and the Grand Prix in Singapore, moving up to fourth in the drivers' championship. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished second in the Grand Prix, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli completing the podium in third.
