SPACEX BEGINS PUBLIC TRADING AFTER $75BN IPO

FRI 12 JUN 2026 MARKETS

SpaceX commenced trading on the Nasdaq on Friday following a $75 billion initial share sale. Gwynne Shotwell, Chief Operating Officer and President, stated in an exclusive interview that the timing felt appropriate for the aerospace company to enter public markets. Shotwell noted uncertainty in previous years about whether a public listing would occur at all. The company previously considered an IPO unlikely until regular missions to Mars commenced.

Shotwell has served as SpaceX's top executive beneath founder and Chief Executive Elon Musk since joining the company in 2002. She oversees day-to-day operations of a 22,000-person workforce and manages rocket development, Starlink operations, and integration of xAI. Shotwell stated that SpaceX operated as a private company to focus on long-term objectives rather than quarterly financial performance. She indicated that the building blocks for a publicly traded company are now established across SpaceX's various business divisions.

Musk concentrates on high-level strategy and technical development whilst Shotwell manages operational execution on Earth. She sits on SpaceX's eight-member board and engages with customers, regulators and investors. Shotwell cited the company's track record of completing difficult projects, noting that Musk jokes "we make the impossible, we just make it late." The company's headquarters operates in Starbase, Texas, with a significant Starship factory facility.
