MISSILE ALERT DELAYS RONALDO'S AL-NASSR MATCH IN RIYADH

TUE 13 OCT 2026 FOOTBALL

Cristiano Ronaldo scored as Al-Nassr beat Uzbekistan's Neftchi Fergana 3-1 in an AFC Champions League match in Riyadh delayed by an hour after a missile alert, reports said. Saudi Arabia's Civil Defence issued the warning shortly before kick-off, and a stadium announcer said the match would go ahead. Explosions were reported in the capital, and residents received a phone alert warning of a "hostile aerial threat". The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired towards Riyadh by Yemen's Houthi movement. Al-Nassr went ahead through Angelo before Ronaldo doubled the lead just before half-time.

Neftchi Fergana pulled a goal back but were reduced to 10 men after 65 minutes, and an own goal secured Al-Nassr's win, reports said. Saudi Arabia has faced a series of attacks attributed to the Houthis, including strikes on oil facilities, tankers and Riyadh's international airport. A Saudi minister reportedly vowed a "serious response" to the airport attacks. Ronaldo's goal followed his return to club football on Friday, having left Portugal's national team camp during a Nations League break. Portugal's football federation provisionally suspended him on Saturday after he walked out of the camp.

The delay has raised questions over whether other sporting events in the region could be affected, including Formula 1 races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. F1 is reported to be pressing ahead, with the Qatari and Abu Dhabi governments saying there is no reason to cancel. The UK Foreign Office has stopped short of advising against travel to the region but has warned of "a risk of more attacks and unforeseen escalation." It has told British nationals to prepare for possible flight cancellations and airspace closures.
