MIDWIVES WIN £750,000 OVER NITROUS OXIDE EXPOSURE AT HOSPITAL

TUE 13 OCT 2026

Midwives have won a combined £750,000 settlement after being exposed to nitrous oxide while on duty at a hospital, according to reports. The payout was made after the midwives raised concerns about the effects of exposure to the gas during their work. Reports of the settlement did not name the hospital involved or confirm how many midwives received compensation. The employer responsible for the payment was not identified in the coverage. No statement from the hospital or health body was included in the reports.

Nitrous oxide is widely used in healthcare as a pain-relief gas, including during childbirth, where it is often administered to patients through a mixture commonly known as gas and air. Midwives and other maternity staff can be exposed to the gas in the course of administering it to patients, particularly in areas with limited ventilation. Occupational exposure to nitrous oxide has separately been raised as a workplace safety issue for healthcare staff, distinct from its use as a treatment for patients. Reports of the settlement linked the payout to this type of workplace exposure rather than to any complication affecting patients. The reports did not set out when the exposure is said to have occurred or how long it continued.

The settlement draws attention to nitrous oxide exposure as an occupational health issue for midwives and maternity staff, according to the reports. It was not reported whether the hospital has made or plans to make any changes to ventilation or safety procedures as a result. The reports gave no indication of whether other staff members have brought or intend to bring similar claims. No comment from the midwives or their legal representatives was included in the available reports.
