NFL SUSPENDS DRE GREENLAW ONE GAME OVER HEADBUTT

MON 12 OCT 2026 US SPORTS

The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw for one game following his conduct during the first half of Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, the league announced on Monday. The league said Greenlaw used his helmet to headbutt Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones, who was not wearing a helmet, while on the sideline after a play. Greenlaw was ejected from the match as a result. The NFL cited a breach of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which covers conduct contrary to generally understood principles of sportsmanship.

Greenlaw is set to be eligible to return to the 49ers' active roster on 20 October, meaning he will miss the team's Week 6 match against the Washington Commanders on Monday night. According to the report, this is not Greenlaw's first suspension of this kind, having previously been suspended for one game in 2025 for unsportsmanlike conduct. The NFL's statement did not elaborate further on the circumstances surrounding the headbutt beyond the rule violation cited.

Greenlaw retains the right to appeal the suspension. Should he do so, the case would be heard by one of four jointly appointed hearing officers selected by the NFL and the NFL Players' Association: Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera or James Thrash. No date for a possible appeal has been confirmed. The 49ers have not yet commented publicly on the suspension.
