AUSTRALIA CLOSE IN ON TEST WIN AFTER RENSHAW'S 272 RUNS IN DURBAN

MON 12 OCT 2026 CRIME

Australia moved to the brink of victory in the first Test against South Africa in Durban after Matt Renshaw scored 190 in the first innings and followed it with 82 or 89 in the second, according to differing reports. Australia declared their second innings on 314 for six, setting South Africa a target of 421 to win. South Africa closed the fourth day on 102 for four, leaving them needing 319 more runs with six wickets in hand to avoid defeat. Aiden Markram was unbeaten on 45 at the close, having shared a stand of 66 with David Bedingham, who scored 46. Australia's bowlers took key wickets late in the day, including Pat Cummins dismissing Tristan Stubbs and Renshaw taking the wicket of Temba Bavuma with his part-time off-spin, reportedly his first in Test cricket.

Renshaw, playing his second match back after a three-year absence from the Test side, recorded a match tally of 272 runs across the two innings. His approach differed markedly between innings, with reports describing a cautious, accumulative first innings followed by a more aggressive second, including sweeps and reverse-sweeps that reportedly unsettled South Africa's fielders. Nic Maddinson also contributed, scoring 48 off 38 balls in the second innings after a first-innings duck. South Africa's bowling attack, including Keshav Maharaj and Lungi Ngidi, took wickets but could not prevent Australia's declaration. According to one report, South Africa have won 11 and drawn one of their Tests under Bavuma's captaincy, including victory over Australia in the 2025 World Test Championship final at Lord's.

South Africa must now bat out the final day to secure a draw, with reports noting that teams have survived 140 overs to save a Test only twice in the past 13 years. The match is the first of a South African home summer that is reported to include further fixtures against Australia, Bangladesh and England. Markram's role is described as central to South Africa's hopes, with one report noting he has yet to be dismissed by Australia's Nathan Lyon across 313 balls faced in Tests. The outcome of the final day's play was not yet known at the time of reporting.
