PENIX SUFFERS RIB INJURY AS FALCONS LOSE TO RAVENS
Michael Penix Jr. sustained a rib injury in the fourth quarter of the Atlanta Falcons' game against the Baltimore Ravens, according to CBS Sports. The injury occurred with 27 seconds remaining in regulation when Ravens linebacker Tavius Robinson sacked him. Penix briefly left the field for one play before returning, but was unable to take part in overtime. Tua Tagovailoa replaced him for the extra period and threw an interception on the second play of the Falcons' overtime drive, sealing the result for Baltimore. CBS Sports reported that Penix said he expects to be ready for the Falcons' Week 6 fixture.
Penix had returned from an earlier injury to lead Atlanta to consecutive wins, including a victory over the Green Bay Packers, after the Falcons opened the season with third-string quarterback Cooper Rush under centre. Rush had thrown for 229 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions across two games while starter Tua Tagovailoa was sidelined by an oblique injury sustained before the season opener. Since returning, Penix recorded 479 yards, two touchdowns and one interception across two outings. Against Baltimore, he threw for 240 yards and one touchdown before the injury. Former NFL player Justin Simmons, speaking on CBS Sports HQ, questioned Penix's decision to take hits while running rather than sliding to avoid contact.
Simmons said Penix meant a great deal to the organisation and urged him to protect himself in future, adding that Falcons supporters wanted to see him stay healthy. The extent of the rib injury has not been detailed beyond CBS Sports' report that Penix expects to play in Week 6. Tagovailoa's availability for future games following his oblique injury has not been confirmed in the source material. The Falcons' quarterback situation remains a point of uncertainty following the overtime loss to the Ravens.
