HIDDEN CAMERAS FOUND ROUTINELY IN UK GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS

FRI 12 JUN 2026 INTERNATIONAL

Security officials have discovered hidden cameras, microphones, and trackers regularly throughout Whitehall offices, government cars, and diplomatic outposts. A hidden camera was located in a ceiling panel within a sensitive UK government building, according to officials briefed on the matter. The discoveries have renewed concern about espionage conducted by hostile states including China and Russia.

The UK National Authority for Counter-Eavesdropping (Nace) operates a dedicated unit focused on identifying covert surveillance devices across government sites. Approximately 70 staff members work within this unit, which conducts routine sweeps of buildings and periodic inspections of less secure facilities. The authority prioritises checks of confidential areas but extends its work to lower-sensitivity locations. The Ministry of Defence provides support to Nace's operations.

Finding bugs within government properties is described as routine practice by security personnel involved in the eavesdropping detection work. The regular discovery of such devices underscores the ongoing nature of surveillance threats facing British government infrastructure. Nace's continued operations reflect the established need for persistent counter-espionage measures across the civil service.
