POLICE PROBE ALLEGED PLOT TO ASSASSINATE TUSK AND KOSINIAK-KAMYSZ
Polish police arrested a man on Sunday accused of threatening to assassinate Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said. The suspect is also alleged to have threatened to kill Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as a deputy prime minister. Authorities did not identify the suspect or release details of the alleged plot. Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Galecka said in a social media statement that the ministry had ordered "action to be taken in this matter". Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz had not commented, according to reports.
Kierwiński said security officials had been on high alert after receiving a tip-off about the planned attack. Radio Zet reported that police had received an email containing information about the threat, though no other details about its origin were immediately available. Members of the police, the state protection service and ministry representatives held an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss the matter. Special services spokesperson Jacek Dobrzyński, who speaks for special services minister coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak, told reporters afterwards that authorities were treating the information as "serious". Polsat News quoted Dobrzyński as saying further action had been decided at the meeting, without providing specifics.
Dobrzyński said threats and "worrying messages" reaching police had increased "month after month, year after year", adding there was "a strong probability that these threats could have been acted upon". No further information on the suspect's background or motive was disclosed. Officials gave no timeline for when further details or any charges might be announced.
