YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK CLOSES AFTER TIGER ENCLOSURE INCIDENT

SAT 10 OCT 2026

Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster, closed its gates on Saturday after what it described as a "serious incident" at its tiger enclosure. Emergency services were called to the scene as the park activated its emergency response procedures. In a statement, the park said it was working closely with the authorities "to ascertain exactly what happened". Witnesses reported that a screen was erected around the enclosure during the afternoon and that shots were heard shortly before the site was evacuated. The park confirmed it would remain closed for the rest of the weekend.

According to witness accounts reported, a man described as "agitated" was seen entering or jumping into the tiger enclosure, prompting the response, though neither the park nor police have confirmed this version of events. The park said the safety and wellbeing of its visitors, staff and animals "remain our highest priority". South Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service were contacted for further details on the incident. No official confirmation of injuries or casualties had been issued by Saturday evening. The park did not disclose what specifically triggered the evacuation or the use of firearms reported by witnesses.

The park said it was continuing to liaise with the authorities to establish exactly what had taken place before reopening. It gave no timetable for reopening beyond confirming the closure would last the remainder of the weekend. South Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service had not issued public statements on the incident at the time of reporting. The park said further information would be released once the circumstances had been established. Visitors due to attend over the weekend were affected by the closure.
