MCENROE REVEALS DAVID WANTED TO LEAVE BEFORE KNICKS' NBA FINALS COMEBACK
John McEnroe disclosed that fellow Knicks supporter Larry David attempted to leave Madison Square Garden during the NBA Finals match between New York and San Antonio on Wednesday night. The Spurs had established a 29-point lead, prompting David to suggest departure. McEnroe persuaded David to remain in the arena, citing the possibility of a comeback. The Knicks subsequently completed the largest comeback in NBA Finals history, winning 107-106 with a 58-30 second-half run. The victory gave New York a 3-1 series lead.
McEnroe recounted the exchange during an appearance on ESPN's "NBA Today" programme on Thursday. He described the moment at 71-42 as "a little negative" before detailing David's repeated requests to leave. McEnroe responded by encouraging a positive outlook, noting that a reduction from 29 points to smaller deficits remained mathematically viable. The former tennis player stated this represented the most positive approach he had adopted during his 56 years attending Knicks games, which began when he was eight years old. David ultimately remained at the venue for the entire match.
The Knicks' second-half performance featured Jalen Brunson's 36 points and a decisive late tip-in by OG Anunoby. The match was attended by multiple celebrities, including Jerry Seinfeld, Taylor Swift, Ben Stiller, Fat Joe and Timothée Chalamet. McEnroe attributed the comeback partly to the energy and reactions from the celebrity attendees present at Madison Square Garden.
