STOLEN RENOIR PAINTINGS RECOVERED, SIX ARRESTED IN FRANCE
Two paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir stolen from a museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer last month have been recovered, and six suspects have been arrested, according to the town's mayor, Bryan Masson. The works, a portrait titled "Madame Colonna Romano" and a depiction of a woman at a well called "Jeune femme au puits", were taken from the Renoir Museum on 8 September. Masson said the recovery brought "an immense relief" and described the paintings as "part of our city's history, our cultural heritage and the legacy Auguste Renoir left to Cagnes-sur-Mer." Masson's office did not provide details of where the paintings were found or their condition, and police have not issued a statement on the recovery. One report said a source close to the investigation told AFP that five people had been arrested, while the mayor's confirmation put the total number of suspects at six.
According to Masson, the thieves cut through a fence surrounding the museum grounds, smashed a window and used an electric saw to cut through the frame mountings of four paintings in a matter of minutes, shortly before 6am local time. They escaped with two works but abandoned two others, "Madame Pichon" and "Coco lisant" — a portrait of Renoir's son Claude reading — in the grounds as they fled, reportedly rushed by the museum alarm and police sirens. Masson said at the time that the thieves were "well equipped and well informed" about the museum and had clearly scoped out the premises beforehand. The Renoir Museum, located in Renoir's last home before his death in 1919, holds twelve of the artist's works along with personal items including his easel and wheelchair.
France's culture minister, Catherine Pégard, said on social media that the recovery was a "huge relief" and that the paintings "belong to our collective memory." She said the works would now return to the museum, which she described as "steeped in history and dear to both local residents and visitors from around the world." No further details on the police investigation or any prosecution have been announced.
