CLARK SAYS FEVER MUST IMPROVE DEFENCE AFTER PLAYOFF EXIT
Caitlin Clark said the Indiana Fever's biggest issue this season was inconsistency, speaking at a press conference after the team's first-round exit from the WNBA play-offs. She said the side needed to improve defensively, while also stating there was room to improve offensively despite already having what she described as the best offence in WNBA history. Clark said retaining Kelsey Mitchell would be important to continuing that offensive output. She added that the team needed to work out how to build a roster capable of succeeding defensively, alongside individual players becoming better defenders.
According to figures from StatMuse cited in the report, the Fever had a defensive rating of 109 this season, among the worst in the league. The team is reported to have surpassed the WNBA record for most losses in a season while also scoring 100 or more points in a game earlier in the season. Indiana averaged 96 points per game, the best mark in the league, and scored a total of 4,222 points across the season, setting WNBA records for most points in a single season and highest points-per-game average. The Fever scored 100 or more points in a game 20 times during the campaign.
Mitchell, a teammate of Clark's, has said it is difficult to play under the pressure that comes with being on a team featuring Clark. No timetable has been given for roster decisions or for Mitchell's future with the team. Clark's comments were made during post-season exit interviews following Indiana's play-off elimination.
