WARRINGTON WOLVES GO TOP OF SUPER LEAGUE WITH WIN AT ST HELENS

THU 11 JUN 2026 RUGBY

Warrington Wolves moved to the top of the Betfred Super League table after defeating St Helens 18-6 at St Helens. Tristan Sailor gave the hosts an early lead with a kick-and-chase try, but Albert Hopoate crossed for Warrington just before half-time to level the scores. Josh Smith then ran 80 metres to put the Wolves ahead for the first time, before a Jack Welsby handling error allowed Ewan Irwin to run in the decisive third try. Irwin also kicked three goals to complete a man-of-the-match performance.

The victory was Warrington's fourth successive win and lifted them above Leeds at the top of the table. St Helens, managed by Paul Rowley, have now lost three matches in a row and sit fourth with an inferior points difference to their rivals. The match carried a significant injury toll: Zack Gardner dislocated his shoulder early on for Warrington, while St Helens lost Jonny Lomax after 15 minutes with a suspected jaw injury and he was subsequently taken to hospital for scans. St Helens pair Jake Davies and Mark Percival, along with Warrington's Jordy Crowther, all left the field for head-injury assessments in the first half.

An incident involving Jake Shorrocks and James Bentley was placed on report by match officials. St Helens' slide down the table leaves their challenge for top spot significantly weakened with three consecutive defeats now recorded. Warrington's run of form places them in a strong position at the summit of the Super League standings. The result represents a notable shift in the league's upper reaches, with Leeds dropping off top spot following Warrington's win.
