CRISTIANO RONALDO ACCUSES COACH JORGE JESUS OVER PORTUGAL EXIT
Cristiano Ronaldo has accused Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word, in a lengthy statement explaining why he left the national team's camp. Ronaldo said he was left on the substitutes' bench during Portugal's Nations League match against Norway despite Jesus having promised him 30 minutes of playing time. He was then left out of the squad for the following match against Denmark. In the statement, released on Tuesday, Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and to Portugal supporters for leaving the camp, while making clear he felt he had been treated unfairly. He said he is not retiring from international football despite the dispute.
According to Ronaldo, Jesus initially proposed that he play only in the first and fourth of Portugal's four Nations League fixtures, skipping the trips to Norway and Denmark. Ronaldo said he rejected that plan because, as captain, he did not believe it set the right example to stay away from the squad. He said Jesus then changed his approach on the day of the Norway match, telling him he would play for 30 minutes, an arrangement Ronaldo said he accepted even though it conflicted with his personal recovery and training schedule. When that promise was not kept, Ronaldo said Jesus appeared to want the match to finish before leaving the stadium without greeting supporters. A further meeting involving Ronaldo, Jesus and sporting director Simao Coutinho followed, at which Ronaldo said it was agreed that Jesus would clarify matters at a press conference. Instead, Ronaldo said Jesus addressed the media in a manner he felt was unfair, prompting him to leave the camp.
Luka Modric said it was "sad to see this happening to him in his own country", adding that Ronaldo deserved a proper send-off from the national team. The dispute emerged in the same week Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football with Argentina, scoring in his final appearance against Benin. Ronaldo has not officially quit the Portugal squad, and Jesus has reportedly left open the possibility of a recall. It remains unclear whether the relationship between the two can be repaired following the public disagreement.
