DAVID SILVA ENDS RETIREMENT TO JOIN HONG KONG CLUB SHA TIN
Former Manchester City midfielder David Silva has ended his retirement to sign for Hong Kong Premier League club Supreme Sha Tin, the newly-promoted side has confirmed. The 40-year-old has agreed what has been reported as a short-term deal. Silva announced his retirement in 2023 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. He confirmed his return in a video message posted on the club's social media channels. "I am very happy to join Supreme Sha Tin for this experience," Silva said, adding that he was looking forward to experiencing the culture, food and football in Hong Kong.
Silva spent ten seasons at Manchester City, winning four Premier League titles and two FA Cups. He left the club in the summer of 2020 to join Real Sociedad in Spain. At international level, Silva won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012. He earned 125 caps for Spain, scoring 35 goals. He was part of a Manchester City midfield that also featured Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho.
Supreme Sha Tin are currently eighth in the Hong Kong Premier League after four matches played. The club said Silva would travel to Hong Kong to settle in, join squad training and build up to peak match fitness before making his debut. Sha Tin are next in action against Hong Kong Football Club on 18 October. The move marks Silva's return to professional football for the first time since his retirement announcement.
