JAGUAR UNVEILS £130,000 ELECTRIC TYPE 01 GRAND TOURER
Jaguar has unveiled the Type 01, an all-electric four-door grand tourer, at an event in New York. The car is priced from £130,000 in the UK, while JLR has confirmed a minimum price of $130,000 in North America, with some reports citing $130,500. JLR, the car's parent company and a subsidiary of India's Tata Motors, describes the Type 01 as the "most technically advanced, powerful and aerodynamic Jaguar ever engineered." The design features a long bonnet intended to recall Jaguar's 1960s E-Type, electric motors producing around 1,000 horsepower, and a 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds. Accounts of the car's range differ, with one report citing up to 320 miles at "sustained highway speed" and another putting it at up to 450 miles.
The launch comes two years after JLR's 2024 rebranding campaign, which featured an advert showing models in brightly coloured clothing and slogans including "live vivid" and "delete ordinary" but no car, prompting criticism including from Elon Musk, who asked on social media "Do you sell cars?" JLR wound down production of its previous Jaguar models during 2024 and 2025, and the Type 01 is expected to be the first of three new electric Jaguar designs. Gerry McGovern, Jaguar's design chief at the time of the 2024 rebrand, who said the company had "no desire to be loved by everybody," has since left JLR.
Reaction to the Type 01's design has been mixed. Luxury car consultant Craig Kinnersley called it an "unmitigated catastrophe," while journalist Steve Fowler described it as "incredible" and said it made him "proud to be British." Alistair Weaver of Edmunds said Jaguar deserved credit for a distinctive design but warned the company faces a difficult market in the US, where he said demand for electric vehicles is declining. The launch follows similar moves by Ferrari and Bentley, which have each introduced their first EV models this year as luxury carmakers test wealthy buyers' appetite for electric vehicles.
