SABAN LINKS NIL PLAYER PAYMENTS TO COACH SACKINGS

WED 07 OCT 2026 FOOTBALL

Nick Saban said the rise of name, image and likeness payments to college football players has given boosters and alumni a greater sense of influence over football programmes, which he linked to a wave of coaching departures. Speaking on Theo Von's podcast "This Past Weekend", Saban said that raising money from alumni to pay players has led contributors to believe they should have a say in decisions at their schools. He said this dynamic was behind the departure of 33 coaches during and after the 2025 season. Saban did not name any of the coaches or schools involved in his remarks. He framed the issue as a direct consequence of how college football now operates financially, rather than as a comment on individual programmes.

Saban argued that the scale of money now being raised to assemble rosters means schools must be far more careful in deciding which players receive payment. He said programmes face questions such as how to evaluate players, who should be paid and which positions should be prioritised with available funds. Saban said that paying the wrong players leaves a programme at a disadvantage, and that schools which fail to evaluate talent correctly will suffer the consequences through underperforming teams. Saban coached at Alabama, compiling a 206-29 record and winning six national titles with the Crimson Tide, in addition to a national championship with LSU in 2003. He also had a spell as head coach of the NFL's Miami Dolphins.

Saban said coaches are increasingly judged on decisions extending well beyond matchday performance, as NIL spending becomes central to how rosters are built. He pointed to the number of coaching changes across the 2025 season as evidence of the pressures now facing programmes. Saban's comments were made in the context of a wider discussion on NIL, player payments and recruiting during the podcast appearance. No further details on specific schools or coaching outcomes were given in his remarks. The podcast appearance did not include confirmation of any further comment from Saban on the matter.
