FIRE SHUTS ROADS AND HALTS TRAMS IN NOTTINGHAM CITY CENTRE
A large fire broke out at a residential property on Market Street in Nottingham city centre on Monday night, prompting the closure of multiple roads and the suspension of tram services, according to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. The service said 12 fire engines were sent to tackle the blaze, which started at around 22:55 BST. Two boys, aged 12 and 14, were later arrested on suspicion of arson, according to reports. Nottingham Express Transit trams were halted in both directions between the Theatre Royal and Market Square while crews worked at the scene. The fire service urged the public to stay away from the area.
Roads closed as a result of the fire include Upper Parliament Street, Lower Parliament Street, Market Street, King Street and Queen Street, the fire service said. A spokesperson advised local residents affected by smoke to keep their doors and windows closed. By Tuesday morning, fire crews remained at the scene, with the service saying they were likely to be there for several more hours. The property involved was described by the fire service as residential. The extent of damage to the building has not been detailed.
The fire caused widespread disruption across Nottingham city centre, affecting road traffic and tram passengers during the closures. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service continued to work at the scene into Tuesday, with crews expected to remain for several more hours. The investigation into the cause follows the arrests of two boys on suspicion of arson. Emergency services have not said when the affected roads and tram services will reopen to the public.
